The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Characters

The Magnificent Seven has just won it’s first box office weekend, so now it is time for the ranking of the stellar Magnificent Seven cast.

With Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Byung-hun Lee, Vincent D’Onofrio, and just about every other bad-ass actor and actress, The Magnificent Seven debuts some of the best characters in the Western genre.

So with all of these great characters, we had to rank every single one of our favorites from the latest Western success :

Spoilers Ahead

  1. Chisolm / Denzel Washington:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Of course when Denzel Washington is in a movie you have to give him the power of rank one. Not only is this one of my favorite Denzel movies, but the hall of fame actor gives one of my favorite performances of his ever.

With a true grittiness and African American character in true power ( dually sworn by the state ),  Denzel shows us why he will always be one of our favorite actors .

Antoine Fuqua casts this movie perfectly as the diverse cast is exactly what this Western needed.

2. Josh Faraday / Chris Pratt

Probably the best role of Chris Pratt’s career, Josh Faraday is the perfect mix of bad ass, bad person, with the grit of a cowboy anti-hero. Chris Pratt brings the toughness, alcoholism and comic relief that fits his character more than enough.

Look for Chris Pratt’s role to be your favorite going into The Magnificent Seven .

3. Billy / Byung-hun Lee:

The awesome asian actor that is making his stardom in every action movie to date, Byung-hun Lee is the perfect diverse mix, to a usually non-asian western.

While some are befuddled over there being an asian guy in the wild west, Byung-hun Lee’s character “Billy” is exceptionally unique and extremely likable, as you wish Antoine Fuqua could have given his character a different ending.

4. Red Harvest / Martin Sensmeier:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Red Harvest is probably the most surprising on our list, as the Native American character was barely featured in any of The Magnificent Seven trailers.

Played by Martin Sensmeier, the Native American star gives Natives the cultural and action hero recognition everyone should have been seen.

Not only was his character the most unique, but he was also in the top ranks of bad-assery, amongst a very awesome and action starred crew.

From eating a dears heart, to some of the best battle paint you will ever see, Red Harvest was cool, tough, and stone cold amazing to watch on screen .

5. Jack Horne / Vincent D’oforfrio:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Known mostly for his roles in Law & Order Criminal Intent and as Daredevil’s “Kingpin”, Vincent D’onofrio keeps his weight up as he plays the notorious Jack Horne.

Jack Horne is an extremely brutal religious man, who like to get personal with all of his kills.

His bear like physique and extremely squeaky voice are sure to keep you entertained through his entire portrayal.

6. Manuel Garcia Rulfo/ Vasquez:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Or as some called, ‘The Outlaw’, Vasquez is the perfect mix, of crazy, brutal and straight up gritty. While his character was definitely one the movie needed, it did feel like he lacked the screen time and stand-out abilities to reach any higher on our Magnificent Seven list.

7. Goodnight Robicheaux:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Played by the famous Ethan Hawke, Goodnight fails to connect deeply with most audiences, making him the perfect character to have killed off. Don’t get me wrong, Goodnight was a great character but also one we not one we would rank high on our list.

As an ex-confederate army general, Goodnight is the perfect character to enjoy on screen, but also one you would happily trade for some of the other characters killed off in the movie.

Honorable Mentions:

Haley Bennett/ Emma Cullen:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

The female lead of this film, Haley Bennett does an extraordinary job of portraying the only female lead in this movie. Her character “Emma Cullen” is full of grit, toughness and real emotion that I would hope to see in a sequel.

Peter Sarsgaard aka The God Of Playing Villains:

The Magnificent Seven: Ranking The Best Of The Seven

Peter Sarsgaard’s character “Barthomalow Bogue” is the perfection of evil, opiate overdose and plain awesome bad guy acting.

By the end of watching this movie you’ll be hoping for a very fashionable death scene for his evil character.

Final Thoughts:

The Magnificent Seven was some of the most fun in a theater I’ve had all year, and the only thing I think the movie did poorly was setting it’s self up for a sequel.

By killing off the majority of the most likable characters, I don’t see how The Magnificent Seven makes a significant sequel that it’s fans want.

With all of that being said, who was your favorite character from The Magnificent Seven?
