Rila Fukushima who is most well-known for her large role in The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman, has been cast in the highly controversial Ghost in the Shell which is to star Scarlett Johansson.
Ghost in the Shell is a popular Japanese manga which has a couple of anime adaptions. The manga is said to be what inspired films such as the Matrix, and is set for a live action debut in theaters March 31st, 2017.
Rila Fukushima, who played a sword wielding martial artist and mutant named Yukio, was a big part of Hugh Jackman’s The Wolverine sequel. While her popular character has not appeared in any other X-Men movies, many fans have been wondering when they would get to see her in action again.
Fans may get their wish as Ghost in the Shell is full of futuristic , fantasy type action. While Rila Fukushima’s role is not yet specififed , it seems likely her character would find plenty of action as Ms. Fukushima has a nearly exclusive history with action type of roles as she has also played Katana in CW’s Arrow .
Perhaps she will fight alongside Scarlett Johansson’s character, who is Major Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg leader of an elite government task force that fights cyberterrorism, in a futuristic world where humans have some sort of hackable cybernetic enhancement.
While there is a lot of controversy over white actors being cast in this dominantly Japanese movie, those that are outraged can only hope that castings such as Rila Fukushima’s get to shine in an appropriate light.
Who do you think Rila Fukushima will play and/or who would you like her character to be? Also, will you still watch Ghost in the Shell with its controversy over white washing?
